A very nice pair of ladies vintage off white silk satin wedding shoes, with silver
trim, c. 1920's.
In some light they appear slightly two toned, with the back portion of the shoe just
a shade lighter than the front. See first image, at side seam. This is due to the
way the satin was purposefully laid on the shoe, and is definitely attractive. The
shoes have a strap, with white mother of pearl button. I believe at the time this
heel style was referred to as a spike heel. There is a very thin band of silver
around strap and upper shoe edge. Lining is white kid leather, with fabric near the
toe.
Label inside reads; A. H. Howe & Sons Boston. Size marked in shoe: 8 a
Please keep
in mind however, that although the size does appear to be approximately as indicated,
we are not exactly sure how marked size information compares to our modern sizes,
so please review measurements above for additional details.
The shoes are in very good overall condition. They have been worn, but not excessively.
A few marks to white interiors, but really quite clean and nice. The satin remains
free of splits and cracks. There is some light soiling near heel, (see left shoe
in third photo) with some very light specks at toe, but the satin can be cleaned
to remedy. Metal button shank has caused some discoloration to the satin in immediate
proximity, but this is hidden when strap is secured. Silver trim around upper shoe
edge appears to have oxidized ? (turned brownish) in some areas, especially near
the back. Please see last image with close up of button. (note: strap and side
of shoe appear dark in this image due to low light) You can see the thin silver
band outlining strap and shoe edge. Directly above the button, on both the strap
and shoe, we have tried to show two of these areas where the silver has turned a
brownish/bronzy color. I believe this could possibly be camouflaged with a silver
marker, however this band of silver is so thin that it would be almost undetectable
when the shoe is worn.
Although the shoes do have a couple of very minor cosmetic issues, they are structurally
very sound and in quite good overall condition; attractive and very wearable for
that special bride or to complete that Edwardian -1920's outfit.
Finding good condition vintage shoes, in sizes wearable today, is rather difficult,
so we were very pleased to purchase a small collection of size 6, 7, 8 and 9 Victorian,
Edwardian and 1920's foot wear, listed separately, here on our web site.
