A nice turn of the century gentleman's boater hat, likely late Victorian or early Edwardian, c. 1890 - 1910.

The hat is tightly woven straw, probably hand finished, with a warm light caramel color.

Interior leather band shows the  4 X mark, indicating the hat was a very good quality and likely quite expensive back in the day.  Next to the XXXX mark there is also a hint of the makers name, but unfortunately it is worn and we are unable to decipher.  I know that Stetson used this X quality marking system, but I do not know if other turn of the century companies did the same.

The decorative grosgrain ribbon hat band is not the typical, most commonly found red and blue, but rather an interesting purple and gold.

The hat is in good antique estate condition.  The interior crown padding is no longer present and there are a few very small spots of the original adhesive remaining.  The brim does show some very small edge nibbles, as would be expected for an original period boater.  See 2nd close up image. Nothing glaring, but there nonetheless.  The interior leather sweat band remains soft and pliable.  All stitching to leather is good, culminating in original brown silk grosgrain bow.  Exterior decorative grosgrain ribbon band is in very nice condition, free of rips, tears, snags, etc.  There is a very small area of residue where it appears something was adhered to the ribbon, such as a badge or other adornment.  The hat has a nice all over warm, mellow caramel finish, which does show a very slight darkening near the interior leather band, but not as distinct as show in the last image.  The bright sunlight made this appear more noticeable than actual.

Overall a very nice original antique, high quality gents boater in very wearable size and condition, perfect to complete a period look or ensemble.
