A really lovely period lace boudoir or theater cap, c. 1911 -
1917.
Several of our reference materials note that by 1910 boudoir ~ breakfast caps had become so popular that they were being worn at other times of the day, including evening, these then being called theater caps. Apparently little differentiated the two, except the theater caps were possibly somewhat fancier, or with more delicate lace, etc. Due to the ethereal quality of the lace in this fine Edwardian cap it seems possibly that it could have been worn for either function.
This particular wonderful early handmade example is formed completely of fine reseau and tape lace. The Point de Champ tulle is embellished with graceful tape lace flowers, leaves and and fanciful tendrils. A similar very ornate pattern repeats in the surrounding ethereal Princess lace.
This elegant boudoir, bed cap or bonnet is in exceptionally nice estate condition. It actually appears to have never been worn, used or laundered and was obviously cherished and carefully stored. Meticulous examination revealed absolutely no problems of any kind; no rips, tears, breaks, holes, snags, spots, or specks. Seams and bridges are all in tact. Tulle and lace show no signs of weakness or other issues. It is likely that the bed cap has darkened somewhat with age, as it is now an all over light creamy ecru shade.
Boudoir or theater, this lovely hat was obviously treasured, possibly part of a wedding trousseau.
Please see our other listings for the lingerie bed jacket (sold separately) shown on display bust in first image.
