A rare pair of antique headwear stands, used for refreshing/aerating hats and wigs, etc. while traveling, apx. c.1890's ~ 1910's.
Each hat stand is comprised of two sections, or pieces, that interlock together for use, then quickly and easily separate to fold flat for travel.
The individual sections are formed of two thin layers of some kind of firm board, covered in beautiful oriental or Asian motif silk damask.
These interesting old hat stands are in very nice antique estate condition, however one has a cosmetic issue. Structurally both remain very good, free of breaks, cracks, bends, etc. The silk damask is also quite nice, with no holes, snags, splits or distress. The slightly smaller yellow stand does have some light water marks to the lower portion on four of the eight sides. See last image. The green stand has a tiny apx. ½ inch slightly darkened area where it appears a tag may have been affixed. Otherwise the damask on both stands looks quite good, with just light general signs of use.
I have previously seen older versions of this type of Chinese traveling stands that were identically crafted, however they were painted/decorated, rather than fabric covered, subsequently I dated this pair to the late Victorian or early Edwardian era, but they could be earlier.
Definitely unusual and somewhat out of the ordinary, they are very collectible as unique, cultural objects, yet they remain very useable as hat stands, or other similar purpose today.
They would nicely compliment an antique or vintage display and make a charming accessory for milady's boudoir or vanity.
