Charming antique lavender wand, tied with fine pink silk ribbon, c.1900.
The collection of antique wands found here on our web site were purchased from a
French family. Antique wands were made for centuries in France, becoming favored
as ribbonwork projects here in the later 1800 and early 1900's.
This antique wand has been formed with lavender stems around some type of white wadding,
which is barely visible behind some of the ribbonwork. Rather amazingly the wand
still has some fragrance, so it is likely that the wadding was used to periodically
refresh the aroma with a drop of natural lavender oil. This method can still be
used today, so the wand can continue to be used and enjoyed.
It is in very nice antique estate condition. The silk ribbons look very good, free
of distress, stains, rips, tears, etc. The ribbon ends could be pressed if desired.
Originally this wand probably had a bow at the top, however it is no longer present.
This can easily be remedied by inserting similar ribbon through lavender or ribbon
ends and tying desired bow flourish.
Antique ribbon work lavender wands are not easy to find and this example is in really
lovely condition. A charming period addition to milady's vanity, dressing table
or boudoir.
