This case is pictured on page 163 of The Collector's Encyclopedia of Compacts Carryalls
and Face Powder Boxes, by Laura Mueller. It is described as; a Richard Hudnut Black
Moroccan leather fitted traveling make-up case with pink faille lining.
This particular vintage Art Deco black leather and pink faille moire lined locking
Hudnut case, c. 1920-30, is fitted with two cream jars, one clear and one milk glass,
as well as a clear bottle, a package of facial tissues, several nail files, and a
French Ivory chamois nail buffer. Rather amazingly a key is also present!
The case is in exceptionally nice condition. Moroccan Leather is excellent, exterior
with just a few extremely minor, very small scuffs. Handle is good. Hinges and
clasp operate well. Although the key appears to be original we cannot quite figure
out how the lock operates, so we will leave that to someone more knowledgeable and
more patient!
The pink moire interior, which is a richer pink than appears in our pictures, looks
really striking against the rich black Moroccan leather. The interior is also very
nice and presents well, with just slight water marks to inside back, below mirror.
Lift out tray reveals another compartment below. Both areas nice, each with very
small, minor water spot.
Nail files remain wrapped and have never been used. Chamois on buffer has 4 small
brown spots, all to one lower edge, but it can easily be replaced. Original cardboard
protectors remain around cream jars. Both jars and the bottle are clean and free
of breaks, cracks, chips, etc. Mirror is nice, with no cracks or breaks. It is
kind of spring loaded, so when you open the case the mirror pops up and it will stay
standing, so the case could be used and displayed on a vanity or dressing table.
Overall a very nice, early Richard Hudnut vanity or travel case.
