Material: Linen, Silk Floss & Hand Made Battenburg Tape Lace
Size: Overall ~ 36 inches, Linen center ~ 13 inches
Quantity: 1
The 11 & 1/2 deep hand made Battenburg lace on this antique c. 1880 - 1910 society
silk tea cloth was made of very thin, fine thread and then hand stitched to the linen.
Various shades of high quality silk embroidery floss was expertly used to decorate
the hand hemmed, very fine cream linen in an aesthetic Art Nouveau floral chrysanthemum
and foliage motif.
This tea cloth is not only a very fine example of early Society silk work, but also
that of a very talented and skilled lace maker.
It is freshly laundered and in very nice condition, but it is not absolutely perfect.
There are several small light specks and marks remaining to the linen, but they
are subtle and fairly light. Quite inconsequential in our opinion, with no large
noticeable stains, etc. The lace is in exceptionally nice condition, almost perfect,
with just a few hard to find missing/loose brides. Even though this is very fine
lace it feels strong, as does the linen.
If you are a lace or Society work collector you should enjoy this wonderful antique
cloth.
