The handmade antique Battenburg tape lace on this round white supper, or tablecloth
is a remarkable 12 inches in length. Superior Venetian drawn work accents the center
linen, which has been completely hand stitched to the lace. This cloth dates to c.
1880-90.
The tablecloth is in nice overall condition, however it is not perfect. There are
a few broken brides in the lace; nothing large or noticeable, just a thread or two
here and there.
Additionally, although I gave this cloth a quick wash, after sitting unused for many
years it could definitely benefit from a long soaking. There are number of very
tiny, minute, light specks on the linen, as well as a few similar light, pencil eraser
size and few individual threads in the drawn work show some discoloration. There
are also couple of tiny dark marks to the lace, as well as several small areas that
show some storage related light, diffused discoloration. These are certainly not
glaring issues, and likely will resolve with a long soaking, however it is our policy
to disclose anything noted. The lace feels strong and so does the linen.
This really
is an exceptionally well made Victorian tablecloth, with beautiful lace and if you
can either address the few areas needing attention, or overlook them, as most antique
textiles have a few minor issues, you will appreciate & enjoy this beautiful antique
cloth.
