I must say this is one of my favorite ribbons ~ a divine antique watered silk sash,
likely French and dating to the latter Victorian or earlier Edwardian eras.
The ribbon is a harder to find period example featuring watered or warp effect roses,
as well as beautiful damask roses.
Colors are rich, vibrant tones; red, pink, burgundy, lilac, purple, celery, forest
green and yellow, with tiny touches of black highlights on a cream ground.
Both ends are finished with a hand done hem, so I believe this may have been intended
as a belt sash, or scarf.
Additionally, there is one nicely finished seam where two pieces were joined together,
at apx. one yard from end. I did not even realize there was a seam until I had examined
the textile several times, so it is not easily detectable. Shown in last image above.
This antique sash is in very nice estate condition. Due to the nature of antique
silk I examined the length very carefully and found just some slight, very minor
signs of age and a couple of tiny pin holes near one end. (the one yard pc.) Obviously
stored well and protected from sun and moisture, the silk is strong and stable. Colors
remain rich and vibrant, with no fading. It is clean and free of stains, moisture
spotting, rust, etc.
Due to the brocaded roses reflecting the light in unusual ways this ribbon was difficult
to photograph. In the first image, taken in direct light, the colors appear somewhat
lighter than actual and the middle two images slightly darker. The last two, lower
right and left images reflect the rich colors quite accurately.
This very fine and rather rare, long, wide damask patterned watered roses silk ribbon
sash would make a high quality addition to an antique textile, ribbon or vintage
clothes collection.
