This is one of the most interesting, extremely high quality and in my humble opinion, attractive vintage handbags I’ve encountered in a very long time.
It dates to the 1920 -
1930 Flapper era.
The hallmarked sterling silver frame features a beautiful polychrome red and black champleve enamel Art Deco motif, with ornate filigree embellished with fine seed pearls, as well as vibrant green and white stones. The inlaid green stones could be jade or enamel, it is difficult to tell. A lovely dark red cabochon stone jewel, with a color and appearance similar to natural coral, jade, cornelian or agate, adorns latch/clasp. Frame reverse is also enameled, albeit in a slightly less fancy black and silver linear design.
The purse body is equally divine; a wonderful confection of nubby gold silk metallic jacquard type fabric, with a vibrant multi color red, blue, purple, white and green floral motif, that features a dimensional embroidered aesthetic. High quality details, including intricate stitching, ruching and edging complete the fine bag.
The interior is lined in a rich peach silk faille, with two side pockets, one of which still retains the original mirror, also framed in matching peach faille.
This hand bag is in extremely nice vintage estate condition. All pearls, jewels and stones are present, free of damage and seemingly original, with lovely sparkle and sheen, likely very much as they appeared when the bag was new, almost 90 years ago. The exceptional polychrome enamel work, which we believe to be Champleve, remains bright and lustrous, with and no missing pieces or chips. The sterling silver frame, including the fine sterling filigree work, remains perfect, with no issues whatsoever. The clasp works well, with firm secure closure and symmetrical alignment. Hinges operate smoothly. Purse body remains firmly attached to frame. Nubby gold metallic fabric, which we believe to be silk, is exceptionally nice, clean, free of distress, rips, tears, holes, spots, stains and oxidation, etc.. Peach silk faille lining is also very nice, with no rips, tears, holes, etc, just some slight darkening of fabric near frame, likely due to minor signs of use and close proximity to the sterling silver.
We are unfamiliar with the makers mark shown below. It looks like an inverted triangle, possibly containing two letters, one of which may be a P.
This very high quality, well made vintage bag would make a wonderful addition to any discriminating collection.
