A very interesting antique Scandinavian two compartment silver box. Typically of Nordic ancestry, especially Denmark and Sweden, these types of silver objects were originally used as a pomander or vinaigrette for aromatic, perfumed liquid and/or smelling salts, often given by a suitor to his beloved as a betrothal - engagement gift.

Research indicates that similar love token boxes, called Hovedvandsaeg by the Danish and Luktevannshus by the Swedish, date from the 18th to the latter part of the 19th century.  Although we found no marks on this particular example, style, construction and design elements suggest a mid-late 18th century date.

The box is nicely decorated in a period Louis XVI floral, scroll and shell motif, with an ornate crown and birds (or angels ) top figure.  It features a lovely vase or urn shape with two hinged compartments, the second in the foot.  I understand the smaller area was frequently used for small coins or, as in this case, with four tiny divided sections, likely for spices.

This antique box is in very nice estate condition.  Hinged lids operate well and close securely, albeit top lid slightly more snugly than lower.  Please note:  In my second image I did not realize that the lid was not completely closed when I took the picture.   The box does close perfectly flush, without any problems, see my first and third images.

The silver is in very nice condition, with good exterior pattern detail present.  Interior still retains a nice gold gilt wash.  We do note two very small dings to shoulders, the largest shows best in fourth image, apx. 9:00 position, the second to tiny to show, otherwise overall exceptionally good.

While single compartment examples are quite typical, double compartment boxes, such as this one are less commonly found.  Additionally, this fine example displays the desirable, ornate Louis XVI design and pattern motif. Certainly a very attractive antique Hovedvandsaeg for the discriminating collector.
