A very nice larger size antique figural silverplate napkin ring featuring a cut glass holder for the napkin that is decorated at top with a ladies right hand and floral bouquet.
The flowers appear to be Forget-
Me-
Not, (or similar) which in the Victorian Language Of Flowers, if held in the right hand, symbolizes true love, faithfulness and memories.
This napkin ring is in extremely nice antique estate condition. Although it does not show well in our images the silver plate remains quite lustrous and shiny, with some light scratching, but overall very good. The cut glass is also very nice, clear, with no cracks and all saw tooth edges are sharp and pointed. After my third examine with a magnifying glass I did discover a heretofore unseen tiny flea bite to the outside of one of the saw tooth edges, however the point remains sharp and quite defined, so this is not a noticeable issue. In my humble opinion it is extremely minor, however if it bothers the perfectionist I have a suggestion as follows;
The glass ring is attached to base via a removable band, held by a period appropriate wing nut type affair on the underside, which when loosened, allows for removal and cleaning of glass ring. Subsequently it would be very easy to loosen slightly and turn fleabite to the underside, facing the base, so it would be virtually invisible, even with magnification.
The napkin ring is die stamped underneath, (not embossed) with the pattern number and patent info, as well as the Meriden name and date of '09, for 1909, however the name and date have been die stamped through. I have previously seen this on other antique Meriden pieces and from what I have been able to gather, has something to do with the many buy outs, mergers and acquisitions of numerous Meriden Connecticut silverplate companies at the turn of the century.
My research also indicates that this particular antique napkin ring, with the Victorian language of flowers motif and charming sentiment, is not one of the more commonly found designs, so this very nice condition example would certainly make a delightful addition to a discriminating collection.
