A very fine, early, ball top sterling silver sugar sifter, attributed to George B.
Sharp, c. 1860 ~ 70.
The design features a long, slender, column handle, topped with a ball and finial,
each a distinctive characteristic of Sharp's work.
The bowl is beautifully fluted, scalloped and pierced with numerous five point stars.
The entire bowl, as well as the lower handle, is gilded in a bright gold wash gilt
vermeil.
This is a well made, substantial serving piece, in extremely nice antique estate
condition. We see no dings, dents or repairs. Gold wash vermeil on bowl remains
amazingly intact; I would conservatively estimate 98%.
Ball top is lightly monogrammed; MMS.
In addition to ~ Sterling Patented ~ hallmark, retailers name, Browne Spaulding
& Co. also appears.
While this server is not hallmarked as to manufacturer, historical records show that
after some years of use, this particular design was patented by Sharp in 1866, and
it is well established that some of his wares were not marked, even pieces he manufactured
for Bailey & Co, and Tiffany & Co.
This large, pierced, and gilded antique sifter is an excellent example of very high
quality period design and craftsmanship.
