Beautiful antique Rose Cut blood red Bohemian garnets adorn this original, authentic
Victorian brooch, c. 1860 - 80.
The eight point star motif is a period design, very indicative of the era. Center
portion, a smaller six point star, is raised above larger outer star, which gives
a very three dimensional effect. Additionally the stones graduate in each star,
from larger on the outside to smaller towards the middle, which adds to the overall
dimensionality, as well as increases the brilliance, due to the various reflective
properties of the different size stones. All garnets appear to be original period
stones. They are a wonderful rich pomegranate color, flashing brilliant red when
illuminated. Each stone is prong set in yellow gold, maybe Pinchbeck or low karat,
possibly over silver, both widely popular at the time.
The original T-bar and C-clasp remain; both work well and function properly. Clasp
is hallmarked; Czechoslovakia This mark is worn and only partially visible, (first
three letters extremely faint) however enough remains that wording is discernable.
This antique brooch is in excellent estate condition. With very high magnification
we see one tiny, minute stone blem/chip, which may be original, as period technology
did not allow stone faceting with a high degree of precision. At the very least
it is very old, as edges are completely smoothed. Again, extremely tiny, not visible
to the eye, nor with a magnifying glass, only under 20+ power jewelers loupe and
only mentioned as our policy is to disclose anything noted, regardless how minor
and/or insignificant.
Really an exceptionally nice, early antique authentic Bohemian garnet brooch; clearly
marked as to Czechoslovakian origin, which is rather hard to find, as many are not.
