A very nice pair of vintage cultured mabe pearl earrings, set in 14 karat yellow
gold. The backs are hallmarked both 14K and 585, indicating they were likely made
in Europe, probably the United Kingdom.
The pearls are white, with pink and slight iridescent undertones. The surface of
each pearl is excellent; really smooth with no blems and they have very high luster.
They are set in 14k gold, with fancy edge detail. The ear clips are Omega style,
and it would be very easy for a jeweler to add a post if desired for pierced ears.
The settings are in very fine estate condition.
The backs of the earrings are open, rather than solid. This is important because
it allows you to see the back of the pearl. Poor quality pearls, pearls with thin
nacre and shallow pearls that have been backed are set in closed backed findings
in an attempt to disguise their poor quality. Conversely, this open back allows
you to see that these pearls are not doublets, they have thick, uniform nacre and
are absolutely as as nice on the back as they are on the front.
Additionally, at 18mm these pearls are quite large and hopefully you can tell from
the images that they are also quite deep, yet they are not heavy, so they would be
very comfortable to wear.
A very fine, high quality, well matched pair of vintage 14k gold pearl earrings.
