A very interesting set of six antique chair seat bottoms, pressed with an ornate
pattern of birds on floral branches, surrounded by fancy scrolls, scallops and a
beaded medallion.
After examining the backs and edges we believe these are made of old pressed leather,
possibly covered or finished on the backs with a thin layer of paper or similar material.
See image #5.
They appear to be unused and are in very good condition. Due to the nature of leather
and its inherent natural irregularities, each seat is somewhat unique. Also, each
has subtle differences in the finish, ie; areas that appear slightly matte compared
to the overall, which has a slight sheen. This is minor and would not bother me,
but if perfection is required I believe a coat of leather polish or similar would
suffice.
Also, one has a very tiny edge nick, and two have lines that cross the pattern, one
small, on a back corner and one larger, across the back quarter of seat. Since these
lines do not show on the reverse we assume these are just natural variations in the
leather, however we are including a close up image, so those more familiar with this
type of material can make their own determination. See image #4.
The seat bottoms have seemingly been stored securely stacked upon each other and
remain very flat and not bent or tweaked out of shape.
This set of six old chair seat bottoms are very fancy and ornate, much more so than
newer versions and we believe they date from apx. 1890-1910. These are virtually
impossible to find in unused condition.
